Consent for Initial Gum Therapy
Gum or periodontal disease is a condition that I control by following these steps. It takes continuous work and a lifetime of attention to keep it under control and help prevent the loss of your teeth. Let up on controlling it and the gum disease comes right back.
I understand I have gum disease and Initial Gum Therapy is only the first step in a lifelong program in controlling the gum disease.
I understand this procedure removes the harmful plaque and tartar from below the gum-line, helps control the growth of damaging bacteria and starts the process of controlling gum (periodontal) disease.
I have been given Oral Hygiene Instructions so I can do the most important phase of therapy, my Home Care Therapy to maintain the health of my teeth and gums and control the disease.
I promise to return to a dental office for frequent professional Periodontal Disease Control Appointments and checkups at an additional fee every three months or as often as recommended. Frequent maintenance is vital to control your disease.
Due to the deeper nature of the scaling and root planing (smoothing) done during the Initial Gum Therapy, for my own comfort I understand local anesthesia must be used. Some of the common risks of local anesthetics are prolonged numbness, soreness, and severe allergic reactions.
I also understand that I may experience some discomfort after the procedure is completed and the numbness from the anesthesia wears off. I can take what I usually take for pain.
I promise to follow the specific post treatment instructions I have been given.
After Initial Gum Therapy, your gums may feel tender and your teeth may have some sensitivity to hot and cold. This is normal and gradually decreases over time. Prior to treatment your gums are usually swollen due to the gum disease. As your gums heal, the swelling goes down and the gums shrink back to their natural position. If the natural gum attachment has receded due to disease and bone loss, more of the tooth’s root will be exposed. The teeth may look longer and feel looser.
If there are areas of my teeth and gums that are more sensitive than other areas, it may be due to not keeping the area clean enough or being in need of desensitization treatments at an extra cost. I understand that if it doesn’t resolve and I am in discomfort, that I should make an appointment to come in to get it checked.
I understand the purpose of the Initial Gum Therapy procedure and authorize the use of local anesthetic and the use of any other materials and methods the dentist considers necessary in the treatment of my gum disease. If my gum disease does not respond well enough to Initial Gum Therapy, I may need to have the deep scaling redone or I may need to have additional therapy done by a gum disease specialist.
I understand that I should take mineral and vitamin supplements to boost my immune system.
The better and the more often I brush, floss and WaterPik my teeth the more successful I will be in controlling my gum disease.
