• Suboxone and Benzodiazepines Waiver

  • Benzodiazepines are medications prescribed to treat anxiety and panic disorders.

    Commonly prescribed benzodiazepines:

    • Xanax (Alprazolam)
    • Klonopin (Clonazepam)
    • Valium (Diazepam)
    • Ativan (Lorazepam)
  • Benzodiazepines are categorized as depressant medications or "downers." They sedate the central nervous system, which has potential risk for:

    • Slowed Heart Rate
    • Lowered Blood Pressure
    • Depressed Breathing
    • Coma
    • Death

Buprenorphine in Suboxone also functions as a depressant. When taken together, the effects of each medication are heightened which means the combination can lead to severe lack of coordination, impaired judgment, unconsciousness, respiratory failure, and even death.

Combining benzodiazepines with Suboxone can increase the risk for life threatening consequences. It is very important to be honest about your medications with your care team because of the potentially fatal consequences of taking these two medications together.

I have read the information provided to me and understand the potential risk of combining Suboxone and benzodiazepines.
