•As a result of weight loss surgery vitamin mineral deficiencies may develop. Daily vitamin/mineral supplements are required to reduce the risk of deficiencies.
•No caffeine, alcohol or carbonated beverages are allowed after surgery to help prevent the development of ulcers.
•After bypass surgery intolerance to lactose (the sugar in milk) may develop.
•Hair loss is a common complication of weight loss surgery. Maintaining adequate protein intake is important to minimize the hair loss and maintain good health. I will need to eat foods high in protein even though I may not be hungry. On a daily basis, I will need to take recommended amounts of vitamin/mineral supplements.
•Adequate fluid intake is needed to prevent dehydration and help prevent constipation. I may need to drink even when not thirsty.
•Weight re-gain may occur if the guidelines provided are not followed, with increasing portions, and snacking.
•Eating too much, too quickly, or not chewing foods well may cause nausea, vomiting and/or pain.
•I may need to avoid some meats, pasta, rice and fibrous foods if not tolerated well after weight loss surgery.
•Sustained weight loss success will require a change in eating habits and exercise
•Eating foods high in sugar or fat may cause dumping syndrome after bypass surgery and/or failure to loose weight.
•A liquid diet is followed post-op and increasing texture will be allowed as outlined in the Nutrition Handbook. I need to follow the progression as directed to help prevent complications.
•If I experience repeated vomiting and am unable to keep down an adequate amount of fluid, I will call my bariatric surgeon's office or go to an emergency department.
