Precautions Regarding Dental Treatment
If you have taken, or are taking, or plan to take any antiresorptive/antiangiogenic medications, you should know that there could be a risk of future complications attendant to dental treatment.
Some of these drugs have been associated with osteonecrosis, which means "death of the bone.” This destructive process can result in significant loss of jawbone. The risk of osteonecrosis can be increased by certain medical conditions including diabetes, immune suppression, smoking, and cancer. The decision to modify these drugs in relation to dental treatment should only be made after talking with your physician and treating dentist. If osteonecrosis should occur, ongoing treatment may be necessary, including hospitalization, taking antibiotics for long periods, and removal of dead bone. Reconstructive surgery may also be needed.
If you have ever taken any of these medications, it is important to maintain your oral health. You should also inform each dentist you see about your history of use of these medications.
