A glycolic peel (aka: lunchtime peel) is a non-invasive procedure. It is an accelerated exfoliant process that removes the micro-thin top layer of skin cells by dissolving dead/damaged skin cells and oils that adhere to the skin causing clogged pores and a ruddy complexion.
Glycolic acid is a safe non-toxic natural alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) derived from sugar cane. Glycolic acid stimulates cellular turnover that can result in smoother, healthier skin, diminished fine lines, reduction in breakouts, and can reduce skin discoloration due to hyperpigmentation, melasma, sun damage, and smoking.
A glycolic peel may be applied to the face, neck, chest, hands, arms, legs, and back. The glycolic is applied for 3- 10 minutes depending on location of treatment and skin sensitivity. During application a tingling sensation, much like a minor sunburn, may be experienced but will dissipate over time. Some minor flaking of the skin may occur after treatment as the skin continues to turn over. This is normal and can be remedied with moisturizer.
A quick freshening of the skin may be achieved with a single treatment; however, it is recommended that a series of 4-6 peels be done in 2-3 week intervals to achieve desired results. After the series is complete, peels may be done periodically for maintenance.
Glycolic peels will not remove freckles, deep wrinkles, deep acne scars or keloids. For specialized treatment in these areas consult with your Esthetician or Dr. Chen to help you chose and appropriate treatment.
BEFORE TREATMENT:
Discontinue any prescription tretinoin, vitamin A products (i.e. Retin-A, Renova, Differin) or over-the-counter acne treatments 1 week prior to treatment. These products will make the skin hypersensitive to glycolic acid and may result in damaging of the skin. If you have a history of cold sores or fever blisters, inform your Esthetician so that medication may be prescribed 5 days prior to treatment. Do not over expose skin to the sun (sunburn).
AFTER TREATMENT:
Do not use prescription tretinoin, vitamin A or over-the-counter acne products for 1 week after a glycolic peel. Do not expose the skin to sun as your skin will be photosensitive Use a non-comedogenic moisturizer and an SPF sunscreen/sunblock of 30 or higher that contains Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide and/or Avobenzone. Reapply every 2 hours for maximum protection.
